Low Power Wide Area Networks – Exciting Possibilities for Smart Cities
Featuring: Ed Hightower, Technical Solutions Manager at IoT and Beyond
“Smart Cities” is one of the promising areas expected to drive the projected growth in Internet of Things (IoT). Smart Cities applications have unique requirements on wireless connectivity technologies. This presentation will identify some of these unique requirements and describe the several new and innovative approaches coming to market that will shortly provide viable alternatives to the traditional cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, private-radio and satellite networks that Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and IoT have relied on in the past. The new networks are called Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) and come in many flavors. Some are being implemented now while others are working their way through standards committees and will soon be available for implementation.
This presentation will give a brief history of M2M and IoT and break down IoT into three high-level components: devices; connectivity/wireless networks; and back-end systems. The emphasis will be on the emerging technologies and protocols that will enable Smart Cities via LPWANs.
