Event Description:
Game Changer Series:  Technologies

Featuring:    Bryan Merckling, CEO, THINaër
Dr. Orlando Auciello, Professor of Engineering, Jonsson School, UT Dallas

The Game Changer Series focuses on companies and people in North Texas that are changing the way we view healthcare today.
  • Find out how THINaër is changing the healthcare industry with IoT and AI.  The ability to capture and contextualize the data from connected devices, combined with AI, is already improving patient outcomes inside the hospital while simultaneously lowering the overall cost of health care.
  • Dr. Orlando Auciello has invented a diamond coating that increases the life of biological implants.  He grows the ultra-thin diamonds in his lab - each grain is five nanometers across.  Diamond doesn't break down from wear-and-tear, is resistant to chemical attack, and is not rejected by the human body.
Following the presentations, THINaër will be demonstrating some of the latest exciting integrated Med-Tech devices including ECG/EKG in the palm of your hand and from a ring, and Dr. Auciello will be conducting tours of his lab, which is right next to the room where the presentations will be held.

About the speakers and their companies:
Dr. Orlando Auciello, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Bioengineering, Distinguished Chair in Engineering, Erik Jonsson School of Computer Science & Engineering at The University of Texas at Dallas, earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in physics from the Balseiro Institute at the National University of Cuyo in Argentina.  He has expertise in fusion energy, ferroelectric thin films found in non-volatile memories used in smart cards, and oxide films for supercapacitors.  He led the team that developed the ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) thin film technology when he was a senior scientist and later a distinguished fellow at Argonne National Laboratory from 1996 to 2012.  Industrial applications of UNCD coatings include mechanical water pump seals used in cars, coatings for bearings in machines that produce drugs for the pharmaceutical industry, and creating corrosion-resistant electrically conductive metals for electrodes in new-generation water purification systems. UNCD films are also used as a scaffold surface to grow stem cells.  He has won numerous awards for developing UNCD technology, including the R&D 100 Award in 2003, 2008, 2009 and 2011. The Argus II device that he was involved in developing uses UNCD technology and was recognized by Time magazine as one of the best inventions of 2013.  He is co-founder, investor and advisor of Advanced Diamond Technologies Inc., which commercializes UNCD-based industrial products, and Original Biomedical Implants, which will be housed in the University’s Venture Development Center.

Bryan Merckling, CEO, THINaër, built the world's largest B2B online exchange CommerceOne.net, connecting companies from all over the world and re-engineered the supply chains of multiple industries.  He then built Webify as co-founder and COO, where he connected the healthcare industry using web services technology. After major health networks and insurance companies including BCBS and Aetna adopted the technology, Webify was acquired by IBM. He served as Director of Worldwide Software Strategy for IBM where he analyzed emerging technologies and the potential market sizes of each new technology stream. He also led the channel due diligence for IBM business acquisitions.  He left IBM to connect coaches and athletes around the world with technology that is now core to the operations of some of the world’s largest sports programs and used by athletes around the world, including Hank Haney Golf and the Tour Academies. The technology has been featured on ESPN and was acquired by eCoach technologies.  Today he is CEO of Thinaër, a leading edge IoT company that he founded with the intent to change health care and other highly regulated industries.
