Speakers will be followed by a Robotics demonstration by the Allen High School Robotics Team
Dr. Mark Spong
In addition to serving as Dean of the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science since 2008, Dr. Spong is the recipient of the 2011 Pioneer Award, IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, the 2007 IROS Fumio Harashima Award for Innovative Technologies, the Senior Scientist Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and is a Fellow of the IEEE. Prior to his arrival at UT Dallas, he was the Donald Biggar Willett Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from 1984 to 2008. He is a graduate of New Mexico State University (MS in Mathematics) and received his Ph.D. in systems science and mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis.
Allen High School Robotics
Greg Burnham is the engineering and robotics teacher at Allen High School, specializing in BEST and FIRST robotics, Project and Problem based learning and the physics of high power rocketry. Since 1998, he has also been a professional instructor, counselor and supervisor of engineering and science camps throughout Texas. Some camps are taught in combination with training teachers how to teach project based engineering and science for the Texas Tech University T-STEM Center. Science camp instruction: Engineering, wind energy science and engineering, rocketry, robotics and CSI Investigations for Texas Tech University IDEAL Institute. Greg has taught at two Exxon Mobile Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps for Texas Tech University.
Allen Independent School District and Allen High School has hosted competitive robotics teams since 1994. A-Team Robotics started as an after school club. The project-based problem solving nature of competitive robotics has given rise to Texas Education Agency created robotics standards that Allen High School has adopted. Allen High School competes in both Collin County Boosting Engineering Science and Technology (CoCO BEST) Robotics and FIRST Robotics Competition. Both competitions provides students with a challenge, mentoring and hands on experience exploring engineering, programming and applications of math and science.
