Tech Industry Luncheon - 2017 - March...
Description
"The Space Race 2.0: Mobile satellite services"
Featuring Matt Desch, CEO, Iridium Communications, Inc.
Matt will talk about the space industry and the specific company he's been leading for the last decade. Iridium, one of the nation's largest telecom failures in the 1990s, is now thriving and has grown significantly under his direction, and is a leader in providing mobile satellite services for maritime, aviation, government and the Internet of Things. They are in the middle of a $3 billion dollar network transition with 81 new satellites launched by SpaceX, all to complete a new network in 2018. Space is experiencing a resurgence now, similar to the go-go 1990s, and Matt will describe this "Space 2.0" race, and what the implications of that will be for global communications.
About the speaker:
Matt Desch is currently CEO of Iridium Communications, Inc. Iridium is a fast-growing mobile satellite services provider that delivers voice and data access for the maritime, aviation, transportation, defense, and many other industries and individuals who need to stay in touch no matter where they are on the planet. Joining in 2006, Matt took the company public in 2009, and set the company up for long term success with the planning and financing of its next generation satellite constellation, launching throughout 2017 to replace hte current set of 66 low earth orbit satellites. They company has more than doubled in revenues and quadrupled in earnings over the ten years he's been CEO.
Matt has over 35 years of experience in telecommunications. After starting in software development and technology management at what was then known as Bell Laboratories, he spent 13 years at Nortel Networks. His last role at Nortel was president, Global Service Providers, responsible for Nortel's business in Europe and Asia. From 1995 through 1999, Matt was President of Nortel's Wireless networks division based in Richardson, Texas, responsible for growing that division from $2B to over $4.5B and a #2 market position. Following Nortel, Matt was the CEO of Telcordia Technologies, a supplier of operations support software and services to the telecommunications industry, from 2002 through 2005.
Matt currently serves on the board of Aireon, a joint venture he helped create that plans to provide space-based global aircraft surveillance for more efficient and safe air traffic control over oceanic and remote regions of the world. In 2011, Matt was appointed by President Obama to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC). A long time private pilot, Matt also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).
